Jeura

জেওৰা- read as ‘Jeura’ (see-through fence with lightly distributed vertical bamboo strips and horizontally intertwined bamboo strips). Jeura is a demarcation created using bamboo in Assamese households. One may find them being used instead of concrete walls near gates or may find them being used instead of gates, especially in rural areas. This reference image is from outside my room window in Assam. I remember my brother meticulously cutting each strip and weaving it. I saw him weaving this Jeura when I was weaving on my loom with the very same technique of weaving the yarn ‘over and under’ (tabby weave technique). He was employing this technique with different materials. While I looked outside my window beyond the wall, I found my brother creating a woven wall for his kitchen garden. This memory inspires my work, and the photograph below was taken while placing my woven work on the ‘Jeura’ my brother made.
